Bird Street Thrift

Bird Street Thrift opened its doors at the end of 1998 under the name Oroville Rescue Mission Thrift Shoppe. The store opened as a vocational training component of the New Life Recovery Program. Functioning as a vocational training facility, as well as a fund-raising endeavor, the Bird Street Thrift has, for almost 2 decades, provided affordable gently used merchandise in a clean and welcoming atmosphere.

New Life Recovery Students assist with the day-to-day operation of the store; they receive valuable work-experience in cashiering, warehousing, merchandising, stocking, and janitorial duties. Life Skills, such as job readiness, work appropriate attire, customer relations, customer service, and punctuality are taught through practical application.

Donation based Bird Street Thrift not only provides this valuable service for our New Life Recovery Students but supports the program participants at the emergency shelter by keeping the clothing closets on-site well stocked. In addition, walk-in clients are able to receive a voucher quarterly for basic necessities such as clothing, bedding, and household goods. The shop also provides specialized vouchers, tailored to the needs of the client, by referral of participating partner agencies, who have established a working relationship with our organization.

Prior to its incarnation as the Oroville Rescue Mission Thrift Shoppe, the building housed not only Oroville Surplus but a grocery store and liquor store. The former store manager Josh Hengel was performing some minor building repairs and discovered a sealed off crawl space beneath the store that contained remnants of a still and paraphernalia for manufacturing bootleg liquor, decades old beer cans, and even a prescription for medicinal alcohol from the Prohibition Era. These items remain on display in the ORC Administrative Office.

Shopping at Bird Street Thrift is a win-win for both the shopper and the ORC. Customers receive quality used items at a low price, and the ORC uses the proceeds to help fund our New Life Recovery Program. The New Life Recovery program is a 12-month, voluntary, in-house addiction recovery program, that is free of cost to our clients.

We have a huge selection of men's clothing in all sizes here on Bird Street in Oroville. There is a large selection of denim jeans, work pants, casual pants, short pants and dress slack. For tops we have t-shirts, work shirts, collared shirts, formal wear, sweaters, hoodies, and everything in between. The shop also carries men's casual business clothes and business suits. If you are looking for shoes, there is an abundance of men's casual shoes, work boots, running shoes, dress shoes, sandals and other types of shoes. For accessories, we have men's watches and men's jewelry.

Although our stock is always changing, men's clothing brands we regularly have in stock: Levi’s, Nike, Adidas, Trucker, Wrangler, Dickies, Calvin Klein, Lee, Gap, Patagonia, American Eagle, New Balance, Puma, Converse, Ralph Lauren, and many others.

formal wear, coats/Jackets, pajamas, undergarments, shoes, accessories and so much more!

The shop is able offer a variety of women's clothing in expanded sizes, including tank tops, blouses, sweaters, dress shirts, casual shirts, cover-ups, dress slacks, loungewear, denim Jeans, overalls and several other clothing options.

For the younger shopper, the shop carries children's shirts, shorts, denim Jeans, Jackets, sweaters, swimwear, dresses, as well as shoes and other clothing items.

The shop has a nice selection of clothing for babies/toddlers, including highchairs, clothes, newborn carriers, bouncy chairs, pants, shirts, Jackets, baby blankets, booties, hats, shorts and so much more for the littles.
