Addiction Recovery & Relapse Prevention

Recovery as experienced through our Twelve Steps program is our goal, because mere physical abstinence is just not enough in most instances. To improve oneself takes effort, and since there is no way in the world to graft a new idea on a closed mind, an opening must be made somehow. Since we can do this only for ourselves, we need to recognize two of our seemingly inherent enemies, apathy and procrastination. Our resistance to change seems built in, and only a nuclear blast of some kind will bring about any alteration or initiate another course of action. A relapse, if we survive it, may provide the charge for the demolition process. A relapse and sometimes subsequent death of someone close to us can do the job of awakening us to the necessity for vigorous personal action (from the White Booklet Narcotics Anonymous).

Faith-based 12-step, 12-month program

The New Life Recovery Program (NLRP) is a 12-month, residential addiction recovery program, provided at no cost to individuals that wish to be free of addiction. Using both the Bible and the Big Book from AA we explore, identify and remove one's character defects through the 12-Step Process. During this 12-month stay everyone is provided with three meals, a bed, access to showers and clothing. The NLRP is a voluntary program and is the only program based on religion at the ORC.

The 12 Steps

  1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
